Conjunctivitis

• If keratitis, refer urgently to Ophthalmology.

Pathogens

• Common: May be mixed including S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Group A streptococcus, viruses
• Other: N. gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis (If N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis infections, treat the patient and sexual partner and refer to a Sexual Health Specialist)

Drug Treatment

• Duration: Non chlamydia infections - 5 days

Empiric

Chlamydia trachomatis – refer to Sexual Health Specialist and give

azithromycin HMLSchedNZFPML Azithromycin F: 0.4 Half life: 60 hours Elimination: substantial biliary excretion fe: 0.1 Additional points: ↑ warfarin effect.
